Federica first came to attention in 2004 as part of the Italian national team during the World Championships in Barcelona and the European Championships in Dublin. "Fede" (as her fans call her) became the youngest Olympic medallist in the history of Italian sport when she won the silver medal in the 200m freestyle in Athens. Her ensuing victories over the years have confirmed her ability and determination and made her a multiple world record holder. At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, she took the gold medal in the 200m freestyle. At the European Championships in Turkey and the Mediterranean Games in 2009, she set world records in both the 200m and 400m freestyle. She set another world record for the 200m freestyle at the Rome World Championships in 2009. She also took the gold metal for 400m freestyle at this event. She was on the winner's podium once more in 2013 for the 100m and 200m backstroke at the Italian Swimming Championships. At the European Championships in Berlin in 2014, she helped Italy win the gold medal in the 4x200m relay. In 2015, she had two additional successes winning a silver medal at the World Championships in Russia for the 200m freestyle and a gold medal in the 200m freestyle at the European Championships in Israel.
